À propos
Director: prof. Paul Dembinski The Observatoire de la Finance was set up in response to a question raised in the early 1990s: what is the purpose of financial markets? The report entitled Financial markets: mission impossible?, which was published in 1993, led three years later to the establishment of the Observatoire de la Finance. Today, the Observatoire de la Finance is a think tank that provides a link between financial techniques and practices and the demands of the common good. In doing so, it endeavours to clarify what is happening, and then investigates why. The Observatoire de la Finance is an independent, apolitical and non-religious body. The Observatoire’s activities are aimed at: - developing and formulating ideas. The Observatoire engages in inquiry and multidisciplinary diagnosis regarding selected aspects of the economy and finance and their relationship to society; - proposing new leads and views. Following this process of inquiry, the Observatoire compares, tests and refines the various diagnoses and the most promising avenues in consultation with the operators and institutions concerned; - launching a dynamic process to enhance the ethical content of the technical debate. Over the years, the high standard of its work and its ability to initiate dialogue and collaboration have given the Observatoire benchmark status in the field of financial responsibility and ethics. At a time of growing concern about ethics and sustainability, the Observatoire has acquired a degree of skill and credibility which it plans to develop further and make available to its partners and the general public.

𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 & 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 – 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Last week, Brussels hosted the 10th edition of the Ethics & Trust in Finance Global Prize award ceremony - an initiative that celebrates young professionals and academics under 35 for their innovative insights into ethics in the financial world, with submissions welcomed from across the globe. This prize is more than just recognition: it’s a global community, an intellectual challenge and a platform for fresh ideas shaping the future of finance. At Euroclear, ethics in finance is part of our everyday reality - not only as a company, but also as an employer. 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 — 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. 🙌🥇 Honoured (and honestly a bit stunned) to be one of the winners of the 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 & 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. What makes me happiest isn’t the trophy—it’s that a jury of academics and industry leaders felt these ideas speak to the moment we’re living in. My paper is simple at heart. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 “𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆” 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲. 🧠 Yes, knowledge matters. But what really moves people is 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁—and the structures that make trusting the system feel reasonable in the first place. 𝗜𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆. 𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝘂𝘁. That’s why I argue for 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 when things go wrong, clear and honest fees, and advice that puts people first. When misconduct has real consequences and fairness is obvious, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀. I also talk about something we don’t always say out loud. As Europeans, we grew up with a kind of 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲. 🇪🇺 It shaped our habits: cash over markets, guarantees over risk. That worked for a long time, but the world changed—ageing populations, big public bills in health, climate, and security. 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘄, 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 that are actually usable by normal people: 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁, 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁, explained in plain language, without traps. And we should let strong institutions carry the complexity—𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼-𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹, 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, so citizens benefit without turning into full-time portfolio managers. At the end of the day, my message is hopeful. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿. Enforce the rules. Stand on the side of the saver. Make the first step easy. Tell the truth about what the state can and cannot do on pensions, and give people a clean path to invest a little, regularly, for the long term. Do that, and we can turn parked cash into real opportunity—ethically. Huge thanks to Observatoire de la Finance for organizing this prize, and to the sponsors who make it possible: Euroclear, CFA Institute, Pictet Group, and the International Compliance Association. Grateful as well to all my Euroclear colleagues who showed up last afternoon—it meant a lot to see you there. 🤝 I’ll share a few snippets of my speech in the coming days. 🎥 Thank you for reading—and for caring about ethics, trust, and Europe’s future. #Ethics #TrustInFinance #Europe #CapitalMarkets #Pensions #FinancialLiteracy #Euroclear #CFAInstitute #Pictet #InternationalComplianceAssociation

On 12 June 2025, #PaulDembinski gave his farewell lecture as professor at the Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg. Paul, economist-turned-ethicist, has many achievements relevant for practitioners and academic alike, not least founding and chairing the Geneva-based Observatoire de la Finance, which promotes awareness of ethical concerns in financial activities and professions. He co-chairs the Jury of the Global award “Ethics & Trust in Finance for a Sustainable Future”, of which I am a proud member. His farewell lecture "Pistes pour penser l'avenir en des temps d'incertitudes" contain deep thoughts on avenues for thinking about the future in these uncertain times. In partnership with UN SDG Action Campaign, the Observatoire de la Finance is publishing an online conversation on the topic "Debt in the Global South", with the participation of Marina Ponti (Global Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign) and Anazuo Salihu (Prize winner of the 8th edition of the global Prize Ethics & Trust in Finance, Lecturer and Researcher at Prince Abubakar Audu University). Why are so many developing countries facing rising debt burdens this decade? The rising cost of sovereign debt has led to a worsening of external debt sustainability, leading developing nations to delay important investment in favor of debt servicing. What could/should be done to stop this vicious circle? To what extent a modern version of the Jubilee could inspire strategies for a more “just” and equitable system of debts? These are some of the questions being discussed. ➡️ Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/eHPRnNRg Reminder: the deadline for submission to the Global Prize Ethics & Trust in Finance is 17 March 2025. In partnership with CFA Institute, the Observatoire de la Finance is organizing a series of 5 online conversations on "hot issues" in ethics in finance. Each of these conversations takes place between a CFA Charterholder and one or two previous winners of the Global Prize Ethics & Trust in Finance. We’re glad to announce the publication of our fourth online conversation on “Ethical Issues in Business Governance and Conduct", with the participation of CFA Charterholder Jean-Francois Bouilly, CFA, CIPM, and previous winner Florian Barras, PhD. Do we see a shift from a shareholder dominant approach to a stakeholder-oriented corporate governance? How can the interests of shareholders be aligned with that of other stakeholders? What are the primary ethical challenges financial institutions face when integrating ESG principles into their governance frameworks? How can regulators ensure that businesses adhere to ethical practices in their governance and ESG commitments? These are some of the questions being discussed. ➡️ Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/eHPRnNRg Reminder: the deadline for submission to the Global Prize Ethics & Trust in Finance is 17 March 2025.
